What is a Longline Bra?

Remember those pointy cup bras our grandmothers used to wear back in the day? That style has morphed and changed since the 1940s and 1950s and led us today to the very trendy Longline Bra.

This bra style blends together fashion-chic and a retro look, making it destined to be one of your favorite styles (and ours at Hourglass Lingerie too!). Read along to hear all the reasons we love the longline bra trend.

All About Longline Bras

Longline Bras are often confused with bustiers and corsets. However, longline bras are only technically defined by the band (the part under the cups that goes around the torso) extending further down the torso down to around the belly button/waistline. It is essentially an extended bralette with benefits!

Longline bras are differentiated by their phenomenal versatility. They vary in material, lengths, straps vs strapless, and structure. They come in countless different options, but you can always be assured that it is made with fashion and support in mind.

How Can a Longline Bra Benefit You?

One of the perks about a longline bra is that it looks flattering on every body type! This is one of the reasons it is so popular for bridal parties. It looks great under clothes AND once the clothes come off!

The longer band featured in the longline bra also provides extra support for the breasts. This means they are excellent for fuller-busted women as they can help alleviate back pain, stress on shoulder straps, and distribute weight better while still achieving lifted breasts.

Longline bras are even wonderful for improving posture as the band that extends down the waist and hips helps you stand taller.

When Should I Wear a Longline Bra?

Longline bras have very obviously rose to the forefront of fashion in recent years, and rightfully so! They are one of the few bras that can seamlessly be worn under or solely as clothing. When wearing it as a top, we adore the sleek silhouette look of a longline bra paired with jeans and heels or paired with a long skirt.

Other instances where we recommend longline bras:

  • Deep-plunging shirts
  • Low cut tops
  • Open-side and strapless dresses
  • Bridal gowns
  • Formal attire
  • Girls' night out
  • Date Night

When Should I Not Wear a Longline Bra?

While longline bras are so versatile, there are some occasions that we recommend choosing a different style of bra to best suit you! We recognize that every woman is built perfectly unique and deserves to be equally supported.

If you’re looking for a bra that also provides a shapewear effect, longline bras may not be the best choice for you. Although some do offer this effect, your luck will be much better with a Bustier. Bustiers extend longer to the hipline and are designed specifically for sculpting the torso as well as providing cleavage enhancement. Longline bras are meant more for fashion than function like this.

Other instances where we recommend a different bra style include:

  • Smaller-busted women (if sized wrong, the band can roll up)
  • Women with a shorter torso (if sized wrong, the band can roll up)
  • Women with wide set breasts (Instead, look for bras with cups that tilt slightly inward. A bra style that may be more suited for you is a Plunge Bra)

Longline Bra Sizing

Sizing for longline bras can sometimes be a little tricky. This is because not only are you sizing for a bra, but also a torso measurement that must be accounted for. The most important thing to have correct is the band size- and don’t be surprised if this is different for longline bras than other bra styles!

Sizing can especially be a doozy for petite women. To help the band not roll and hit the right location so it’s not uncomfortable, try going a size down to ensure it is snug and not loose on the skin. The easiest way to size yourself is to check out our Size Guide and read up on all of our tips and tricks.
