What is a Longline Bra?

Remember those pointy cup bras our grandmothers used to wear back in the day? That style has morphed and changed since and led us to the very trendy Longline Bra.

This bra style blends together fashion-chic and a retro look. This makes it destined to be one of your favorite styles (and ours at Hourglass Lingerie’s, too!). Read along to hear all the reasons we love the longline bra trend.

All About Longline Bras

Longline Bras are often confused with bustiers and corsets. However, longline bras are only technically defined by the band (the part under the cups that goes around the torso) extending further down the torso. Therefore, a bustier technically counts as a longline bra, but we will get into later why they are very different styles.

Longline bras are differentiated by their phenomenal versatility. They vary in material, lengths, straps vs strapless, and structure. They come in countless different options, but you can always be assured that it is made with fashion and support in mind.

There’s a reason they are becoming so increasingly popular on the red carpet! This style is also very popular for brides.

Who Should Wear Longline Bras?

One of the perks about a longline bra is that it looks flattering on every body type! This is one of the reasons it is so popular for bridal parties. It looks great under clothes AND once the clothes come off!

The longer band featured in the longline bra also provides extra support for the breasts. This means they are excellent for fuller-busted women as they can help alleviate back pain, stress on shoulder straps, and distribute weight better.

They also work great with smaller busts, just make sure the sizing is correct (more on this later).

Our favorites at Hourglass Lingerie are the Parfait Sandrine P5351 Racing Red Plunge Longline Bra and the Freya Soiree Lace AA5014 White Bralette.

When Should I Wear?

Longline bras have very obviously rose to the forefront of fashion in recent years, and rightfully so! They are one of the few bras that can seamlessly be worn under or solely as clothing.

The fact of the matter is that they can simply be worn all the time because its comfort, coverage, and style. Some of our favorite looks are under a deep-plunging shirt or open-side dress.

When wearing it as a top, we adore the look of a longline bra paired with jeans and heels or paired with a long skirt. We will also always reach for our longline bras when we are going out and want a sleek silhouette.

When Should I Not Wear?

If you’re looking for a bra that also provides a shapewear effect, longline bras may not be the best choice for you.

Although some do offer this effect, your luck will be much better with a Bustier. Bustiers, on the other hand, are designed specifically for sculpting the torso as well as providing cleavage enhancement. Longline bras are meant more for fashion than function like this.

Smaller-busted women may have some issues with longline bras because of where the bottom lands on the torso. If it is sized wrong, the band can roll and be very annoying. Thankfully, this can be fixed by just seeking out the proper size.

Longline Bra Sizing

Sizing for longline bras can sometimes be a little tricky. This is because not only are you sizing for a bra, but also a torso measurement that must be accounted for. The most important thing to have correct is the band size- and don’t be surprised if this is different for longline bras than other bra styles!

Sizing can especially be a doozy for petite women. To help the band not roll and hit the right location so it’s not uncomfortable, try going a size down to ensure it is snug and not loose on the skin.
