What is a Sports Bra?

Whether you’re a marathon runner, casual yogi, or just beginning your fitness journey, you need to invest into at least one Sports Bra. They’re one of the only bra styles that are made for every single body shape and size.

This, as well as many other reasons, are why sports bras are one of Hourglass Lingerie’s best-selling bra styles. Continue reading to hear about the amazing sports bra and all it has to offer!

All About Sports Bras

As the name suggests, a Sports Bra is designed to be your best workout buddy ever. They prevent breast movement, chafing, and damage to breast tissue.

They come in lots of different materials, styles, and back designs so you can find one that works perfectly for your unique body. It’s important to prevent excessive jostling and bouncing in the breasts because they are delicate and easily injured.

This is why some women complain of sore breasts after working out! They simply are not wearing an adequate sports bra for the type of movement they are doing.

A great sports bra will be breathable, comfortable, and incredibly supportive.

Who Should Wear Sports Bras?

A wonderful aspect of sports bras is that they are made for ALL women- regardless of size. To unlock this potential, you must be well versed in the styles of sports bras and who they are meant for.

  • A compression sports bra holds your breasts from moving by pressing them against your chest in place. This style works best for women with smaller breasts, on the A-C cup size.
  • An encapsulation sports bra has specific cups for each breast with supportive assets such as underwire. These bras are more suited for women who wear D cups or larger.
  • An encapsulation-compression sports bra is a combination of the first two. We recommend these sports bras most frequently because they look and work the best on DD+ bra sizes.

When Should I Wear a Sports Bra?

We think we have made it very clear up to this point that a sports bra is meant for anything involving workout or activity!

However, there are different intensities of sports bras which are better or worse for different activities:

  • Low-intensity sports bras are meant for slower and less bouncy activities (ie: yoga or walking)
  • Moderate intensity sports bras add a little extra support than an everday bra for activities such as hiking, cycling, gentle jogging
  • High-intensity sports bras are meant for rough and more bouncy activities (ie: running or jumping rope)

Most sports bras come with definition of what type of intensity they are designed for, but you can usually stick by the rule that the more support a bra offers, the higher intensity activity it is designed for.

Sports bras can also be worn for healing purposes by women who have had breast surgery. Their ability to minimize breast movement can be beneficial (and most comfortable). As always, consult with your doctor 1st before deciding which bra style would best suit your circumstances.

When Should I Not Wear a Sports Bra?

While sports bras are godsends for fitness, there are some occasions that we recommend choosing a different style of bra to best suit you! We recognize that every woman is built perfectly unique and deserves to be equally supported.

Some instances where we recommend an alternative style include:

  • Everyday bra for non-workout time (A bra style best suited for you may be a a Padded Bra.)
  • Women looking to enhance cleavage (A bra style best suited for you may be a classic Push Up Bra)
  • Lounging or lazy days (A bra style best suited for you may be a Soft Cup Bra)

Sports Bra Sizing

Finding the right size of sports bra is very important. Wearing the wrong size can be super uncomfortable and ruin that amazing workout. You should begin with your typical bra size and adjust from there.

Many women note that sports bras fit a little snugger, but nothing should be too tight or digging into the skin. Additonally, your breast shouldn't bluge from the top or sides of the bra. If the cups wrinkle up, we recommend trying a smaller size.

We also recommend taking a deep breath in and filling your lungs while trying on a sports bra. This is because it will mimic what it feels like during an exercise when you’re breathing heavy.
